How to Know If Your Suspension Needs Service

You probably won't notice your suspension if it's working correctly. When there's a problem, the system makes it evident. Some of the signs that you can observe include:

• You hear squeaking when you turn or brake and you know your brakes don't need to be replaced.

• One corner of the vehicle sits lower than the rest, which indicates a broken spring.

• When you lean against the vehicle and move away quickly, the vehicle bounces more than twice.

• The tires develop uneven wear, often referred to as cupping.

• You can see oil or grease and obvious wear on the struts or shocks.

The suspension affects the quality of your ride. When there's a problem with it, you can feel it.

• Ride feels rougher than normal.

• The vehicle leans to one side, forward, or backward when you apply the brakes.

• When you make a turn, the vehicle pulls in one direction or drifts.

• You feel the vehicle pulling or drifting when you're driving in a straight line.

Before you assume that these issues are your suspension, you might want to look at your brakes or tires. Many of the signs can be any of these systems. You can rule out the other systems with a visual inspection.
