Service Your Ford or Lincoln at Home with Do It Yourself Routine Maintenance

Here at Maplecrest Ford Lincoln of Union, our priority is out customers. When your vehicle needs routine maintenance work, you can often perform these services using tools and parts directly from our dealership! Some routine maintenance is possible with genuine Ford or Lincoln parts mixed with elbow grease, and we're happy to supply you with the parts and tools you need to get the job done from your home garage!

Not only are these jobs great for keeping your Ford or Lincoln operating at a high level, but they also are a great learning opportunity for you when it comes to your vehicle's performance. Down below you'll find a few more common maintenance needs, the tools/parts required to complete them, and the steps necessary to do them from the comfort of home!

Oil Change

Typical oil changes can take anywhere between one hour your first time to 30 minutes once you become comfortable with the process. We're happy to provide you with the tools and parts you require to do the service on your own, as our service center has everything necessary to help you get going. Tools required include:

  • Wrench (to remove drain plug)
  • Oil filter wrench
  • Oil drain pan
  • Funnel
  • Latex gloves
  • Jack and jack stands or ramps (depends on ground clearance)

Use can also order genuine Ford or Lincoln materials from our parts center, which includes:

  • Oil (traditional or synthetic)
  • Oil Filter
  • Replacement drain plug

With the appropriate tools and materials, you're ready to manage your own oil change! The following steps will walk you through what you need to locate and how to change your oil!

  • Prepare your vehicle, tools, and materials
  • Locate the oil filter and drain plug underneath your vehicle
  • Remove the oil filter cap
  • Drain the oil into drain pan
  • Tighten the drain plug
  • Replace oil filter with new filter
  • Add new oil
  • Check oil level to make sure that you added the correct amount. The oil should come up to the hash mark on the oil tank

Brake Pads

Ensuring that your brakes are operating at top level are important to the safety of you and your vehicle. Replacing the brake pads can often take about one hour and are easily managed from home. It required tools include:

  • Gloves
  • Jack and jack stands
  • Lug wrench
  • C-clamp or length of wood to retract the piston
  • Wrench (socket, open end or adjustable wrench
  • Plastic tie, bungee cord or piece of string

Required materials include:

  • New brake pads
  • Can of brake fluid
  • The following steps will walk you through the steps needed to replace your brakes.

  • Remove the wheel by loosening lug nuts
  • Remove the slider belt
  • Pivot the caliper up
  • Slide out the old brake pads
  • Replace the retaining clips
  • Slide in the new brake pads
  • Retract the pistons
  • Monitor the brake fluid level
  • Reposition the caliper
  • Reinstall the slider bolt
  • Repeat these steps for the brakes on the other side
  • Wiper Blades

    Replacing your wipers blades is simple and ensures that you can drive safely in snow and rain. It can be completed in a matter of minutes and doesn't require any tools at all to complete it! The required parts that you can purchase from us include:

    • Replacement wiper blades - that's all you need!

    The following steps will walk you through replacing them at home.

    • Order the appropriate size wipers from our parts center
    • Pivot wiper blade arms up
    • Slide out the old wiper blades
    • Slide the new windshield wiper blade replacements on

    Change Tail light/Turn Signal

    Replacing your turn signals helps not only ensures safe driving practices but will also prevent getting ticketed and heavy fines when you get pulled over for not having them. This can take one to two hours, but will become easier with practice. You'll once again need protective gloves and a screwdriver, and we also recommend that you bring safety glasses, just in case. The only parts you should need are the replacement bulbs, available at our parts center.


    The following steps will walk you through how to replace your taillights/turn signals in the rear.

  • Open trunk if necessary and remove the retaining screws
  • Remove the electrical connector
  • Remove the taillight lens straight out and away from vehicle
  • Remove the bulb
  • Insert the new bulb
  • Reassemble the turn signal
